Tallinn Song Festival Grounds as a home for artists

The interior design of the Song Festival Grounds building was inspired by the winning project "Kiigele," created in 2022 as a collaboration between the architecture firm 3+1 and Lootusprojekt. The landscape surrounding the building plays an important role in the interior design as well, and a brainstorming session was held with the architects of 3+1 to find a natural and seamless way to connect the planned natural landscape with the building’s interior, ensuring a cohesive concept. The building is striking and has a unique form both inside and out. The starting point for the interior renovation was to emphasize the high ceilings, bring freshness, and introduce coziness into the space. During the 2008 renovation, the building's ceiling was painted dark gray, which concealed an important spatial element—the stairway of the song arch. In the new design, the symbolic stairway element was brought back into prominence.

The main goal of the renovation was to offer fresh and visually noticeable updates that would breathe new life into the space. It was important to create coziness and evoke an emotional response when entering the building through simple design techniques. For example, the two main entrance staircases were given a completely new design. If the renovation only involves repeating the previous interior design, visitors will miss the "wow" effect and the new emotions that a fresh environment could offer. Therefore, it is always worth thinking of solutions that highlight innovation and create a memorable experience for the visitor. Inside the building, this element is now beautifully represented once again. “To create coziness, I emphasized the existing inspiration from nature. I removed artificial and foreign architectural forms, striving to maintain neutrality and openness. The main goal was to use tones and shapes that can be found in nature: warm wood, different shades of green and blue,” describes Kaidi, summarizing the essence of the new interior design.

Building and refreshing the Song Festival Grounds building required significant planning. The interior designer recalls that, along with the design and construction work, it took a year and a half to implement the project. The interior design vision was developed in phases to offer flexibility during the renovation according to available resources and the schedule. Renovation work at the Song Festival Grounds, a venue hosting numerous events, is challenging to plan. The large spaces require thorough preparation and precise coordination to minimize impact on both visitors and event organizers. It was crucial to find a balance between the work and the events so that disruption was minimal and activities could continue smoothly. During the planning, the possibility of offering alternative spaces or solutions during the renovation was also considered. The interior updates of the Song Festival Grounds were completed in November 2024 and have since received praise and positive feedback from several visitors.

The Tallinn Song Festival Grounds is truly a place where culture, creativity, and people come together. Over the years, artists have played a major role at the Song Festival Grounds, and it can be considered a home and meeting place for artists. Recently, the Song Festival Grounds hosted two artists who have significantly contributed to Estonian music culture—Tuuli Rand and Kenneth Rüütli. Together, they looked back on their memories at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds. The video interviews from this meeting can be viewed on the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds YouTube channel.
